Out of the City – Summer Arts Camp
July 15–19, 2024  | Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, Kingston

Out of the City is a dynamic, week-long summer arts camp for racialized and newcomer teens (ages 14–18), offering a powerful space for creativity, connection, and cultural expression. Founded in 2009 by Zimbabwean-Canadian artist Chaka Chikodzi, the camp brings together a diverse group of youth and world-class artists of colour for immersive workshops in a wide range of disciplines.

With generous support from the City of Kingston Arts Fund and the Limestone District School Board, this year’s camp is hosted at the beautiful Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. The program is completely free, with lunch and transportation provided.

Campers will take part in hands-on workshops led by an incredible team of facilitators, including:

  • Stone sculpting with Chaka Chikodzi
  • Printmaking with @magpieprintshop
  • Marimba and drumming with Mpho Mambira
  • Zimbabwean dance with @dumbutshena
  • Collage with @queercollagecollectives
  • Poetry with @shellymgrace

This year was made even more meaningful with the participation of Chaka’s daughters, Sekai and Nandi, who joined as youth collaborators—adding to the spirit of leadership, joy, and intergenerational creativity that defines the camp.

It’s hard to fully express how powerful it is to spend a week with such bright, talented, and engaged young people. The energy, laughter, and artistry that filled the space were unforgettable—and this is just the beginning.
